Last night I had the pleasure of listening to the art director and AIGA medalist, Gail Anderson, speak at MODA in Atlanta. Her inspirational talked covered many topics but one point really hit home, Reinvention. She stressed the importance learning, trying new experiences, traveling to new places, working on passion projects, and not being afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
The past year and a half has been a hard-learned lesson in reinvention. It did not come willfully but I have learned about the value of networking and making connections. When you live in a community where everyone knows your name, you may take certain things for granted. Moving to a new city gives you a blank slate, a chance to meet new people and try new things. As for new projects, I am going to scratch one off my bucket list, typeface design. I’m sure my first typeface will be terrible but I am excited to start this new creative process.
